A fertility procedure, In Vitro
Fertilization Pre-Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET) was first successfully tested in
the year 1978 by Dr. Edwards (an embryologist) and Dr. Steptoe (a
gynecologist) in England. Since then, this technology has been refined and
developed by physicians as well as embryologists, with a record of over
20,000 babies born worldwide through this medical technique. The possibility
of continuing pregnancy achieved using IVF technique has improved one chance
in 4 to 6 from practically nil at IVF centers worldwide.
Comprising of joining of a womans egg and a mans sperm in
laboratory dish, In vitro means outside the body and
Fertilization means sperm being attached to and entered the egg. A
harmonically controlled process, the process includes removing eggs from
womans ovaries and collection of the male sperm. This is allowed to
fertilize eggs in a fluid medium and later the zygote or fertilized egg is
returned to womans uterus for pregnancy to proceed.
There are five basic steps to IVF:
- Stimulation, also called super ovulation
- Egg retrieval
- Insemination & Fertilization
- Embryo culture
- Embryo transfer
